LIS Week of Respect

From October 7 - 11, 2013, LIS participated in the 2013 Week of Respect, an "annual week of awareness, education, and action around harassment, intimidation, and bullying", organized by Garden State Equality.  Each day included special activities and acknowledgements of students who display exemplary character on a daily basis.

Monday was World Anti-Bullying day, and students and staff all wore blue shirts to demonstrate solidarity against bullying behaviors.  Guidance counselors also announced the LIS Character In Action (CIA) awards.  LIS staff members each carry "Character in Action" slips with them throughout the day; when they spot students displaying good character, they give the child a slip, who puts his or her name on it and then puts it in a box in the main office.  Each slip enters the child into a monthly drawing for fun prizes.

Staff members aren't the only ones who can recognize good character, though - students were also able to nominate each other for the Character Recognition Award this week, with the winners to be announced Thursday.

Members of each homeroom signed the Anti-Bullying Pledge on Tuesday:

Wednesday brought the Mix 'em Up Luncheon!  Rather than sitting with their classes, students in each grade level sat with other students from across the grade level in order to meet new people and talk to students to whom they might not ordinarily speak.  This was an exercise in building community and hopefully making new friends!

Guidance counselors announced the winners of the student-nominated Character Recognition Award during each lunch period on Thursday. These students were recognized by their peers for their caring, respectful acts and how they contribute to the LIS community.

Finally, on Friday, all students received Certificates of Participation in the week's activities.  While the Week of Respect activities may be over, every week at LIS is a week of respect, and our students demonstrate their commitment to our caring, respectful community every day.
